The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District will open the Poe Lock, part of the Soo Locks, in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan early to all marine traffic at 8 a.m. on March 21, marking the start of the 2025 Great Lakes shipping season. This special gathering kicks off shipping season in Sault Ste. Marie. Gates to the Soo Locks Park and Observation Deck will open at 7:30 a.m. to allow the public early entry to watch the first freighter pass through the Soo Locks at 8. In addition, the Soo Locks Visitors Center will be open for one-day only in the spring to have an open house from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.
