The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District will open the Poe Lock at the Soo Locks to marine traffic at 8 a.m. on March 25, marking the start of the 2026 Great Lakes shipping season in Sault Ste. Marie.

Gates to the Soo Locks Park and Observation Deck will open at 7:30 a.m., allowing visitors early access to watch the first freighter pass through the locks at 8 a.m.

The Soo Locks Visitors Center will also host a special one-day spring open house from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
