You may have heard about all of the great snowmobiling, skiing and tubing adventures available in Sault Ste. Marie. But did you know that you can visit the Lake Superior shoreline? Or explore a whole new side of Tahquamenon Falls State Park? Here are some of the best kept winter secrets in the Sault Ste. Marie Area.

Chilling in an igloo

Outdoor dining in the middle of an Eastern Upper Peninsula winter can surprisingly be a fantastic time. Igloo enclosures are all of the rage, but there’s only one place to go to sit in one near the Soo Locks. The Bird’s Eye Outfitter’s igloos provide a warm outdoor establishment to meet up with friends and enjoy Michigan made beverages. You can also keep up with the OUT House Consortium and guided snowshoeing/cross-country trails.

Winter Christmas at Point Iroquois Lighthouse
Big lakes, big adventures

Just a short drive westward from Sault Ste. Marie is the Point Iroquois Lighthouse. This historic Lake Superior beacon isn’t just a must-stop attraction during the summer, but it’s also a great winter attraction. Grab your snowshoes and check out this landmark and gaze at Lake Superior and all of her frozen glory. Nearby Mission Hill also provides a jaw-dropping overlook of a snow-clad Lake Superior, and it’s a fantastic snowshoeing location!

Looking for more of a road trip to go along with your snowshoeing? Whitefish Point is always a popular option. Bonus points: it’s one of the best winter birding destinations around.

Tahquamenon Falls
Tahquamenon (frozen) Falls

The grand enchilada of Upper Peninsula attractions, Tahquamenon Falls is an all-seasons destination. But winter is as magical as ever at this state park. From lantern-lit snowshoeing trails in the middle of February to seeing the root beer color of the tannin entrenched Tahquamenon River pops like never before, wintertime is the best time to see this wonder.
