The Place to Be in Sault Sainte Marie

At the heart of the oldest city in the Midwest, Downtown Sault Ste. Marie is rich with history and local culture. Whether you are visiting to take a step back in time at one of our historical sights; take in the scenery surrounding the mighty St. Marys River; or to sit back and enjoy some great food and beverages, our downtown has something for everyone.

Experience History

Take a stroll through the Water Street Historic Block to learn about the figures that were central to the development of Sault Ste. Marie. The collection of historic homes have been maintained to look just as they did over two centuries ago, including the Kemp Coal Dock Office, the second oldest house in Michigan, constructed in 1796.

For more information, stop by the Chippewa County Historical Society where the staff are eager to share a wealth of knowledge on the history behind these homes while showcasing their intricate model city.

The Soo Locks Park is located right along the shoreline of the Saint Mary’s River, offering the perfect area to stop and take in the rays while watching freighters pass by.

Flowers and towering maple trees along well-kept path make for perfect place to take a leisurely stroll. Beyond the observation platform, the park features a lit fountain and the “Torii” – a beautifully designed traditional Japanese archway.
