River of History Museum

The River of History Museum illustrates the complete history of this culturally-important river and its people – from the days of glaciers through the 20th century. The tours through the River of History museum are self-guided. Centuries ago, French fur traders and Native Americans met on the banks of the St. Marys River, where they are united still today at the River of History Museum, located on Ashmun Street.

Audio presentations tell stories that will intrigue adults, bewitch children, and provide both entertainment and education to all generations. Listen as the region’s notable people, like John Johnston, recall the hardships of life at the river’s edge. Eleven separate galleries, including The First People and The 20th Century, display artifacts whose stories reach beyond the banks of the river to include the entire region and its history. Special exhibits on loan from national and regional museums are also featured regularly. For those wishing for a special souvenir, the museum shop features educational gifts and books.
