History
The historic Soo Theatre opened in March of 1930. Movies were the primary source of revenue; however, the generous stage welcomed many musical and drama productions, local musicians/actors, visiting artists, and others. In 1974 it was converted into a two-screen movie theatre. The movie theatre closed in 1998 and the building sat vacant.
In 2003 the Soo Theatre Project Inc., a non-profit organization, purchased the old building. For the first time in 30 years, the Soo Theatre presented a live performance in August 2005, with the audience sitting on folding chairs. Four former stores lining Ashmun Street in front of the theatre auditorium were renovated into music studios. In the fall of 2005, education and performance lessons and classes started, taught by professional teachers/artists. More people have been hired and the programs continue to grow.
