A historic homecoming is in store as Sault Ste. Marie born Abby Roque returns to the area this May for her first time since the 2022 Beijing Olympics. The United States Olympian will be in the Soo during the second weekend of May hosting a meet and greet and offering a special hockey camp.

On May 14, the Soo native will be at the Kewadin Casino DreamMakers Theater hosting a meet and greet between 6 and 8 p.m. This will be your chance to meet Abby and have your photo taken with her and her Olympic Silver Medal. You won’t want to miss your chance to collect one-of-a-kind posters and trading cards celebrating Abby’s accomplishments. Posters and trading cards will be available as long as supplies last.

Abby will also be hosting boys and girls hockey camps between May 13 and 15.. These camps will take place at the Big Bear Ice Arena and allow youth players to train with one of the best players in the world. These camps will be split into two age groups, one for ages 6-9 and one for 10-13. Spots are currently full of participants coming from across Michigan and Ontario, but if you’re interested in joining the waitlist, please email abbyroquehockey@gmail.com.

Abby graduated from Sault Area High School in 2016 where she excelled on the ice with the Blue Devils’ varsity team. She found further success with the Wisconsin Badgers and with the US Women’s National Team. She currently plays for the Minnesota Region of the PWHPA.

On the international stage, Roque has excelled against the best competition in the world. She participated in the 2021 IIHF Ice Hockey Women’s World Championship and was named to the 2022 United States Olympic Team on Jan. 2 where she won a silver medal in Beijing. Abby was also the first Indigenous woman to play on the US Women’s Olympic Team.

On Saturday, April 23, Abby, along with fellow Michigan born Olympian Megan Keller, was a special guest of the Detroit Red Wings. She participated in a ceremonial puck drop before the Wings game against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
