In July, the City of Sault Ste. Marie proclaimed the second Saturday of August “Jane Bamewawagezhikaquay Johnston Schoolcraft Day.” The day is meant to urge and encourage everyone to learn, read, and enjoy the life and writings of the First Native American and First Female Native American Writer completing works in both the English language and her Cultural Language of Anishinaabe Ojibwe for the public and the world.

On Thursday, August 15 there will be a special event near the Johnston House along Historic Water Street. Stop by for music, poetry and stories, activities, and an archaeological dig. Admission is $5.
