New Exhibit and Discovered Shipwreck!

Opening for the 2025 season on May 1st

Our 2024 season was filled with significant accomplishments, including:

  • The discovery of the 300’ steel steamer Western Reserve, found roughly 60 miles northwest of Whitefish Point in Lake Superior.

  • A dedication ceremony for the USCG Motor Lifeboat CG 36381.

  • The installation of a StreamVision360 WXVision camera on the Shipwreck Coast Museum store building, enabling 24/7 live video streaming from Whitefish Point.

We have so much more in store for 2025, so visit our website often and be sure to follow us on Facebook, Instagram, Vimeo, and YouTube to stay up to date with GLSHS!

NEW PROJECTS IN 2025

Observation Deck & Ongoing Habitat Restoration

This newest exhibit is dedicated to the September 1903 sinking of the wooden steamer A.A. Parker off Grand Marais.

Detailed ship models, underwater video, and a section dedicated to the Shipwreck Society’s ongoing underwater research efforts will accentuate this dramatic story of wreck and rescue on Lake Superior.

This exhibit is dedicated to our friend, Erik Foreman, whose work and enthusiasm for the Parker shipwreck made this project possible.

Whitefish Point is a special area for natural habitat. Its sand dunes and beach grasses are environmentally sensitive.

The Shipwreck Museum constructed a barrier-free access boardwalk in 1996 to allow public access for everyone—including those with limited mobility.

Starting in early May, the observation deck will be undergoing reconstruction, so please keep that in mind if you are an early visitor to Whitefish Point!

Ongoing Habitat Restoration at Whitefish Point

The Whitefish Point Joint Committee and a group of energetic volunteers will be working again this year to reestablish native plant species in the area of the former “main” parking area.

Special interpretive signage details the project and priorities of this important work.

If you see volunteers working in this area, please ask them about the project!
