True North Guide Service

Fly fishing for Atlantic salmon, whitefish, smallmouth, jigging lake trout and other adventures!

True North Guide Service specializes in fly fishing for Atlantic Salmon and Whitefish in the St. Mary’s River. The fishing is great from June through September, with our most successful months being July and August. Atlantic Salmon are primarily harvested on a fly rod, but light spin tackle and trolling can be effective, too!

Atlantic Salmon are stocked right here in Sault Sainte Marie at the Lake Superior State University Aquatics Lab inside the Cloverland Electric Power Plant.  Arial battles are epic with these masterful fish! Some average in size from 2 to 15 lbs. Species include: King Coho, Whitefish, Rainbows and Lake Trout. Other species may be found here, too.

Captain Jason Carstens strives to share his passion for his hometown fisheries with you! He is a fully-licensed and insured Charter Captain with the USCG.  Jason has been fishing the waters of the St. Mary’s for over 22 years, and he is a passionate and enthusiastic guide who works hard to make the most of your adventure.

All the necessary fishing equipment is provided for your outing.  True North Guide Service uses Orvis rods and reels. The guide boat is a 17 foot G3 with a 90 HP Yamaha tiller and plenty of fishing room. Catch and release is promoted, however, cleaning for keep is also available, on request.
