Fourth of July Events in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan (2026 Guide)

Looking for the best way to spend Fourth of July weekend in Sault Ste. Marie? From fireworks cruises on the St. Marys River to the annual Independence Day Parade and the Baaweting Powwow, the Soo offers one of the most unique holiday weekends in the Great Lakes, especially with Canada Day celebrations happening just across the river.

Why Fourth of July is Different in the Soo

There’s something about Fourth of July week in the Soo that feels a little more special. Maybe it’s the unspoken rule that we spend the day barbequing or on the river. Maybe it’s the back-to-back celebrations with our Canadian neighbors. Or maybe it’s the way the entire downtown fills up before sunset, waiting for fireworks over the water.

Celebrations Kick off with Canada Day

In true border-town fashion, the festivities start three days early with Canada Day on July 1. People gather along the St. Marys River to watch fireworks from both sides of the border, while local boat tour companies offer front-row seats right on the water.

Independence Day in Downtown Sault Ste. Marie

The Fourth of July Parade begins at 7 p.m., traveling through downtown along Ashmun Street and Portage Avenue. Families can enjoy festive floats, community spirit, and a designated quiet zone at the beginning of the route for those with sensitive ears. After the parade, you can follow the crowd and head to Brady Park and the downtown waterfront for fireworks at dusk.

Because this year is America’s 250th Birthday, the Sault Ste. Marie CVB donated $10,000 to the fireworks show to make them extra memorable. You can read more here. You won’t want to miss it!

Tips for Spending Fourth of July in the Soo

Tip: Why It Helps:
Book boat tours early They can sell out quickly
Bring a light jacket Evenings near the river get cool
Arrive downtown early Parking spots are limited
Stay downtown if possible  Walkable to many events

Make a Full Week Out of It

You might as well make the most of your time here and see other attractions and things we have in the area. The Soo Locks are an obvious must-see while here, as well as the historical sites: Tower of History, Valley Camp, and the River of History Museum. Downtown is full of local shops and tourist stops in one stretch. And I might be biased, but we also have a variety of amazing restaurants and cafés, both uptown and downtown.

For more outdoor options, you can wander Lake Superior State University’s historic campus for beautiful views or walk one of our hiking trails. Or if summer on the water is more your speed, Bird’s Eye Outfitters offers kayak and paddleboard rentals, plus guided tours on the St. Marys River, even through the Soo Locks.

Between the river, trails, beaches, and downtown events, there’s no shortage of ways to enjoy a summer week in the Soo.
