Summertime in the Upper Peninsula is best spent outdoors. Whether you want a site seeing adventure or a relaxing day at the beach, there is something for everyone. But today, let’s focus on a day spent at the beach. Here is a guide to three beaches around Sault Ste. Marie that are perfect for any beach lover.

Big Pine Picnic Area

The first beach on our list is Big Pine Picnic Area in Brimley. Located about 40 minutes from downtown Sault Ste. Marie, it is the perfect beach if you are interested in getting out of town for the day. This beach is secluded so if you are interested in peace and quiet, it is the perfect place for you. Take a nice long walk along the beach and pick some of your favorite rocks! The beach is also free to enjoy for everyone.

Sherman Park

The next beach on the list is Sherman Park. Only a 10 minute drive from downtown Sault Ste. Marie, this park is perfect for a day spent at the beach. Sherman Park is free to enter and offers plenty of amenities including a bathroom, beach volleyball net, basketball hoop, a pavilion, and charcoal grills for cooking out. There is also a camp site for visitors looking to stay a while.
Relaxing on the beach will get you a close-up view of the ships as well as a beautiful spot to watch the sun set.

Brimley State Park

The last beach on our list brings us back out to Brimley, just 15 minutes from Sault Ste. Maire. Brimley State Park gives visitors access to the full beachfront of Whitefish Bay on Lake Superior. The boat launch provides access to the water, making for the perfect spot for a fun day out on the water. This location is free to enter if you have a Michigan Recreation Passport. If not, you can purchase one at the gate to gain access to any state park!
