There is a lot to do in the beautiful city of Sault Ste. Marie. We have awesome museums, unique local shops and restaurants, boat tours, and opportunities to rent kayaks or paddleboards to explore our waterways and islands. But what if the wallet is feeling a little thin lately, or you’re trying to enjoy a more budget-friendly vacation? I have great news: there are plenty of free things to do in the Soo!
First and foremost, I’d be ashamed if my first recommendation wasn’t the Soo Locks Park itself! Admission to the park, the Visitor Center , and the viewing platform are all free. There’s even a fountain where you can toss in some spare change if you’ve got a wish that needs granting. If not, no need to lighten your load of quarters, I get it.Â
Watching a freighter move 21 feet vertically between lake levels right before your eyes is one of the best ways to appreciate the engineering marvel that is the Soo Locks.

Hit the Parks
We have several great parks right in town, and honestly, you could spend an entire day park hopping without spending a dime.
Sherman Park features a huge playground where kids can burn off some energy. Or yourself. You’re never too old for a swing… I think. Located along the Upper St. Mary’s River, it’s a great place to watch freighters heading toward Lake Superior. The park also has volleyball courts and a sandy beach that’s perfect for a summer dip. Pro tip: Sherman Park offers some of the best sunsets in town.
Rotary Park is freighter-watching and kayaking central. Ships pass close by as they squeeze between the park and Sugar Island, making it one of the best places to safely get up close to these giant vessels. It’s also a favorite local swimming spot on the Lower St. Mary’s River. The park features a netted kids’ fishing pond stocked with fish. Just bring a fishing pole. Anglers 16 and under are welcome to fish in the pond and do not require a fishing license.
Brady Park and Aune-Osborn Park are two more great spots for a picnic, a walk, or some serious freighter watching. While swimming isn’t allowed at either park, there’s a very good reason for that. Freighters pass incredibly close to shore, giving you a front-row seat to some of the largest vessels on the Great Lakes.Pack a lunch, pop a squat at a picnic table or on a bench, and enjoy million-dollar views for exactly zero dollars.

Take a Walk Downtown
Looking for a nice walk in the heart of downtown? We’ve got options.
Take a stroll down Portage Avenue, if you can withstand the smell of freshly made fudge and hot-off-the-press waffle cones. Walking through our historic downtown while watching enormous freighters cruise right through the city is a sight you won’t soon forget.
For a different kind of walk, check out the Power Canal Trail. This paved pathway follows the man-made canal that makes our downtown an island. It’s a favorite spot for walkers, runners, and cyclists, and a great place to stretch your legs while enjoying the water views. If you’ve already sampled some downtown fudge, consider it balanced.
Cool Off at the Splash Pad
Another great free activity for families on a hot summer day is the splash pad at Project Playground.
This zero-depth water play area is fully accessible and designed for everyone to enjoy, including visitors who use wheelchairs or have mobility challenges. Featuring in-ground sprays, water jets, and exciting above-ground water features, it’s the perfect place to cool off and have some fun.
And when the kids are done splashing? Project Playground is right there to help them burn off whatever energy they somehow still have left.

Explore Beyond Town
If you’re willing to venture a little outside the city, there are even more free adventures waiting for you.
Take in the incredible views from Mission Hill Overlook, visit the historic Point Iroquois Lighthouse, or spend the day exploring the beautiful beaches along Lakeshore Drive just west of Sault Ste. Marie.
And don’t forget to check out our Events Page to see what’s happening during your visit. You never know what fun activities, live music, or community events might be happening while you’re in town.
Just remember, having fun in Sault Ste. Marie doesn’t have to cost a fortune. Some of the best experiences in the Soo are completely free.
