Visitors to the Soo Locks this year may have experienced a new sweet tooth craving while traveling down Portage Avenue this year thanks in part to the recently opened Sugar Daddy Bakery.

Although not a newcomer by any stretch to the Eastern Upper Peninsula (donut and sweet treat lovers will be familiar with the bakery’s original location in Brimley), Sugar Daddy Bakery has been on a roll since opening its second location at 353 W. Portage Ave. this spring.

The bakery’s assortment of donuts, cinnamon rolls, macaroons and other sweet and savory delicacies, baked fresh daily in Brimley, have more than fit into the downtown scene. Locals and tourists alike have been regularly visiting the bakery. In addition to sweets, soups, salads and sandwiches are offered at the store too.

But there may be one specialty item that Sugar Daddy Bakery offers that leaves a lasting memory – their ginormous milkshakes. Flavors include Oreo, strawberry and the seasonal special edition apple pie and pumpkin flavors and a recent flavor for the month of October.

The most recent of these shakes draws inspiration from a certain famous wizard. For a limited time throughout October you can get your own goblet of sweetness complete with a set of round-rim glasses. The magical butterbeer flavored desert is sure to give you enough energy to write your own wizarding hepatology of novels.

While the spellbinding shake may be a bit of a last-hurrah for the bakery’s inaugural year at its downtown storefront, it does bring heaps of good news with it. The bakery will be back downtown in Spring 2021.

Likewise, the Brimley location, where the real magic happens six days a week will be open year-round. Owner Randy Kennedy and his team of bakers and employees will continue to keep the original location operating throughout the winter.

More information can be found on Sugar Daddy Bakery’s website, www.brimleybakery.com. Delivery is also available from the website as well to workplaces and households from noon until 1 p.m. The Portage Avenue location’s fall hours are 11 a.m. until 7 p.m., keep on eye on their Facebook page for information on when the downtown location will be closing for the year.
